DEAR SIR,

In reply to your letter of the 8th instant, enclosing a copy of the Honourable 0. CHADWICK'S instructions for the design and construction of house-drains, I do not see that there can be any reasonable objection to the mode of construction as set forth in the said instructions, provided that the Sanitary Board give ample notice to property owners, architects, contractors and others interested in buildings of their intention, if they have any, of making the construction in accordance with such instructions compulsory.

In reply to yours of the 8th instant enclosing copies of a Memorandum on House-drains drawu up by the Honourable OSBERT CHADWICK, we beg to state that we have carefully perused the same and hope the suggestions made therein will be adopted.

As it is proposed to amend the Drainage Bye-laws we wish respectfully to draw the attention of the Board to Bye-law No. 2 in which it says that all plaas of premises, drains, &c., must be drawu on a scale of not less than twenty feet to the inch, &c., &c. This scale is quite right for Urban Lots, (if anything too small) but it is much too large for Suburban Lots, such as those at the Peak, some of which Lots if drawn out to the above scales would require special surveys to be made, and be from three to four feet long.

We venture to suggest that this Bye-law be so modified that the premises (only) shall be drawn to a scale of not less than twenty feet, and the Lot itself or any portion of it on which the drains may be shewn (other than connection traps, &c.) on roads leading to the Government drains, be drawn to a scale of 100 feet to the inch, or such scale as the Crown Lease plans may be drawn
